About This Course

The flipped classroom inverts the traditional structure of instruction and practice: instead of delivering new content in class and sending students home to practise independently, teachers provide instructional content for students to engage with before class, and use class time for active learning, discussion, problem-solving and teacher-guided practice.

When done well, the flipped classroom is one of the most powerful shifts a teacher can make. It transforms class time from passive reception to active engagement, allows teachers to provide targeted support to students who need it most, and gives learners greater autonomy over the pace and timing of their initial content exposure.

This course gives education professionals a thorough, practical and evidence-based introduction to flipped learning. Participants explore the research, design flipped lessons and units, create their own instructional content and address the practical challenges of implementing flipped approaches with students who have varying levels of digital access and self-regulation skills.

Who Should Attend

  • Secondary and post-secondary teachers who want to make class time more active and impactful
  • Teachers interested in blended and hybrid learning models
  • ICT coordinators exploring video-based and asynchronous learning
  • School leaders looking for approaches that raise the quality of classroom interaction
  • Basic digital skills required; video creation experience helpful but not essential

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the principles and evidence base of flipped learning and communicate them clearly to students, parents and colleagues.

The flipped classroom is often misunderstood as simply setting video homework. You will be able to explain clearly what it actually is, why it works, what the research says about its impact and what conditions are needed for it to succeed. This is the foundation for getting colleagues, students and parents on board.

  • Design flipped learning units that use pre-class content effectively and maximise the quality of class interaction.

The quality of the in-class experience is what makes or breaks a flipped approach. You will design at least one complete flipped unit, working backwards from the in-class activities you want to run to the pre-class content that will make them possible.

  • Create short, effective instructional videos and other pre-class content appropriate for your students.

Video creation is a skill that can be learned quickly and does not require expensive equipment. You will create at least one instructional video during the course, receive feedback on it and leave with a clear process for creating high-quality pre-class content efficiently.

  • Address the inclusion and access challenges that arise in flipped learning contexts.

Not all students have equal digital access at home. Not all students have the self-regulation skills to engage with content independently before class. You will have a toolkit of strategies for ensuring your flipped approach is inclusive and equitable rather than inadvertently disadvantaging students who are already less advantaged.

  • Evaluate and refine a flipped learning approach based on student performance and feedback.

Flipping your classroom is a process of continuous improvement rather than a one-time switch. You will have a simple evaluation framework for assessing whether your flipped approach is working, gathering meaningful student feedback and making targeted adjustments.
